Gypsy Von Shasta

meanderings from a vintage shasta camper

Help, I’m Alive

I can’t get over this acoustic version of the Metric song…. I think I’m in love with her.

MMmmm… Purty

Look at what Please Sir found for me

Y’all, I can’t WAIT to get the Shasta on the Road. We had another work day this Saturday. (I added a few pics to the Dentage DiShasta album on picasa). Its just that the thing is still such a POS that its not even fun to document.

But, all corners are put back together, insulation is up on the back left corner and the front of the camper is uh….. back on the camper! So, its almost a structurally sound mobile gypsy wagon. I seriously can’t wait for paint and cabinets and fabric.

Speaking of fabric…. I think this is what I’m gonna use…

Singer/Songwriter Night in SoPi - The Train Song by RnB (Rob and Betsy)

Memorial Day sees me in Southern Pines with Sarah, Dan and family for Dylan’s first birthday. On the porch, talking music with Rob we decide to start a band and call it RnB. By Sunday evening we’ve recorded our first original song!! (by recorded, I mean we setup the video camera and posted it on YouTube!) but I’m pretty proud of it. I had the first verse and chorus of this song that I wrote back last fall, inspired by a real life evening. I knew what the song was about, so while Rob and Dan worked out the rythym - I finished up my bluesy lyrics.

1968 Shasta 1500 Renovation Day Two

Finally…. We’ve done some more work.
Dad called me at 4pm on Saturday to tell me he’d been busting up Shastas all day long and repairing rotten wood. He has some pics that I’ll gladly share with you asap. They are pretty boring to me, but for you shasta renovation nuts out there that are into this same kind of project - well you can see what we are doing and call us crazy if you like.

We are learning alot about how these things were put together originally, and we are ignoring all that and just reinforcing the corners with plywood. This is gonna add some weight but more importantly, its gonna give us the stability that we need.

I’m real impressed with what my dad can do. If you put a level on the camper. the bubble is right where it oughta be. This is big news considering the angle it was sitting at the day we picked it up.

So, we went to Lowe’s to pick up some Luan for the walls. We found 6 nice big sheets of real wood paneling at $10 per sheet. I also dropped about $100 just on insulation and learned a thing or two about R-values.

I’ll be back with the outcome from newly purchased products. Its gonna get fun eventually. We get to pick out flooring and build cabinets and all kinds of aesthetic choices will be made. And then we will hit the road!!

If I die in Raleigh at least I will die free

Wandered East this weekend. Spent some time with a dear friend from high school whom I recently reconnected with, after years. We stomped around some neighborhood pockets visiting antique furniture shops, sandwich joints and pubs. I didn’t get to see enough to know if Raleigh is the city for me or not, but I sure did love the company and I think I’ll put it on the short list of places I could live.

Jessica Lea Mayfield and Asheville

I wandered up to Asheville this past Friday night to see a pretty little woman sing heartbreakingly beautiful songs that had become the soundtrack to my emotional state of late.

I met up with friend Lynx, a spritely young gentleman that I met through a Pirate I once shared things with.

Conversation was quick and limitless with tales of fiction, a nod to themoth.org, general silliness… talk of freight-hopping (him) and gypsy drifting (me), and an arrangement to play AAA in the middle of the country in a soon to be ship-shape 1968 Vintage Shasta Camper, goal date c. JULY. Lynx has offered to help get the thing towable and he’s offered consistent funtimes in Asheville until I do something different and for that I’m nothing short of thankful. We skipped around town so gaily that uh…… we missed the show.
